DOWNTOWN THROWDOWN

DOWNTOWN THROWDOWN

The Downtown Throwdown was Hong Kongs first ever competitive CrossFit competition which brought together the fitness community in a series of tests to try and promote to the sport throughout the city. As the sport of fitness and CrossFit grew so did the community in the region and the Downtown Throwdown has now grown into a regional event, welcoming some of the best athletes from around Asia including those who have gone to the CrossFit regionals and the CrossFit games, to compete against Hong Kongs best in both the Scaled and RX divisions over two days of competition. In more recent years, the growth of the competition saw it link up with The Asia Championships (link) and be invited to host the Central Sectional as part of a series of regional qualifiers for the the main event.

In the first year of the competition we were in un-chartered territory with CrossFit being so new in Hong Kong, and with this being the first competition of its type in the fragrant harbor. With two levels of competition the aim was to provide something inclusive that would get the community involved and excited about the competitive world of mixed modal fitness. A great year and plenty to build upon. Wonderful to look back and see that the technique (and unsurprisingly the weights!) have improved no!

Special mention to CFPT legend Matt Tetro who was the spirit of the Throwdown that year.

The return of the Downtown Throwdown saw a collaboration with our friends over at 9 Dragons Fitness for a 2 Day, 2 Venue extravaganza. The mandate was too increase the scale from last year and together we did just that! Using the multitude of space available out at 9 Dragons we were able to devise some awesome workouts and for the first time extend invites to athletes from across the region including CrossFit games athlete Mike Mogard. It was great to bring the wider Asian CrossFit community closer and witness just how big the sport was becoming. This was the year that truly set the platform for years to come…

The third iteration of the Downtown Throwdown saw us partner with the newly created Asia Championships which with the disbanding the the CrossFit HQ Asia Regional, looked to bring the thriving Asian CrossFit community together. Regionals took place across Asia with the Central Regional, featuring athletes from Japan, Taiwan, China, Macau & Hong Kong, becoming part of the Downtown Throwdown. This brought with it some the regions most elite level competitors attracting also ex CrossFit games athlete Daniel Hershey and others who made it through the pre-qualifying. This was also the first year we took the competition offsite and outdoors, and whilst the weather gods tried to literally rain on the parade, it was everything we hoped it would be.

In 2016, the Downtown Throwdown saw its continued partnership with the Asia Chamnpionships nad with plenty of time to organize we looked to up the ante as always. This year saw us move to Kellett School and its brand new facility which allowed for a an 8 lane rig, a vendor area, full Physio support and a wonderful line up of athletes. Over two days of competition we saw some immense performances and all involved were taken aback by just how far the standard had come from years past.
